President & CEO U.S. Chamber of Commerce
Wednesday May 6, 2009
The Intercontinental Hotel, Toronto
On May 6, 2009, AmCham Canada, the Canadian
Chamber of Commerce and the Canadian Council of Chief Executives
co-hosted a luncheon featuring Thomas J. Donohue, President and
CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Over 150 people
representing the Canadian business community attended this sold
out event. In attendance were Robert Bathgate, National
President of AmCham Canada, Scott Bozek, Principal Commercial
Consul with the U.S. Commercial Service, Shirley Ann George,
Vice President of Canadian Chamber of Commerce and David Stuart
Patterson, Executive Vice President of the Canadian Council of
Chief Executives.
Mr. Donohue gave an informative presentation which included an
update on the recent work of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in
Washington, D.C., how the U.S. Chamber has engaged the Obama
administration and how the US Chamber is furthering the U.S.
Canada Partnership. He stressed that the U.S. Chamber is
actively meeting with Obama administration officials and gauging
every legislative proposal, regulation and new idea to determine
whether it will speed economic recovery, strengthen businesses
of all sizes, benefit American workers, support America’s
critical alliances and build the foundation for a more
competitive and prosperous country.
Mr. Donohue stated that Canada and the United States represent
the largest bilateral trading relationship on the planet. He
spoke about how the two countries bear a special responsibility
to meet the challenges of the global economic recession,
pandemics, energy and climate change. Mr. Donohue expressed his
strong belief that bu strengthening the U.S. Canada partnership
and working together to boost competitiveness and prosperity,
the two countries could meet these global challenges.
Mr. Donohue outlined four steps to strengthen the U.S.-Canada
relationship and revive the global economy: 1) stimulate
domestic demand, get credit flowing and repairing and
revitalizing core industries; 2) repairing and reforming the
financial markets; 3) fight protectionism and strengthening the
global trading system; and 4) defend and advance the free
enterprise system. He said that NAFTA nations must hold up the
agreement as an example of what can be accomplished through free
and fair trade.
The luncheon was a resounding success for AmCham Canada and
provided a unique opportunity for the President & CEO of the
U.S. Chamber to meet and engage with Canadian business people.
The event was sponsored by FedEx, Kavinoky Cook LLP, the State
of Tennessee, Ross & McBride LLP and IFG-International Financial
