Presentation by Aaron S. Brickman, Director of Invest in America

On March 5, 2009, Aaron S. Brickman, Director of Invest in America visited AmCham Canada at our Toronto offices. He met with executives of AmCham Canada, including, President of AmCham Canada Robert Bathgate, Board Member John Rodwin, Ontario Chapter Chair Martin Rosenbaum, Ontario Operations Manager, Vanessa Ibe and members, Robert Kay, Jeffery Brown, Lauren Rachlin, Wally Coghlan, Douglas Porter, Alvin Kersting, David Pascuzzi, Marc Pawlyshyn and Sandra Goulopoulos. Also in attendance was Scott Bozek, trade consul for the US Consulate, Andre Leblanc Managing Director of the Canadian office of the State of South Carolina and Godwin Chan, Councilor with the Town of Richmond Hill.

Mr. Brickman outlined the state of Canadian foreign direct investment in the United States. The United States recognizes the important role of Canadian investment in the United States. Canada is in the top five countries that have the largest FDI position in the United States, at $213 billion dollars (2007). In 2006, U.S. affiliates of Canadian firms employed approximately 457,000 people in the United States.

Mr. Brickman explained the services offered by Invest in America launched March 2007. It is the primary U.S. government mechanism to manage foreign investment promotion. He explained that Invest in America facilitates investment inquiries, acts as ombudsman between business stakeholders and the various governmental agencies; it connects investors with U.S. states providing policy guidance while educating investors to help them navigate through government bureaucracy.
There was a lively question and answer period that followed Mr. Brickman’s presentation. The event was a great success.
